Return of WMTSB

Yes, here it is at last, another post, pretty lame isn't it, over a month since the last one, just unacceptable, still I don't see anyone else writing anything. It's not even laziness, I just couldn't be bothered writing, I've been hitting the Japanese pretty hard but I still suck, it's not just a new language, but a new way of thinking, no wonder they stink in English, you basically need your brain taken out and put in backwards to be able to grasp it. Anyway, I'll try to pick up where I left off. So, well, late last month I got to see Dinosaur Jr. on a Monday and Deerhoof on a Wednesday, it was a real rock week, I was inspired to write about it, but it never happened. It was cool to see Dinosaur jr, a band that I've liked on and off since I was 14 or so, they are old farts now, though not that old, but I think time has been hard on them, J Mascis only turned 40 a few months ago yet he's as grey as a witch and fat as a hog, Murph(the drummer) was sporting a shiny bald head, and looked like he could've been someone's dad, Barlow didn't look that bad though, well we'll see how I look in 10 years eh? Cool thing was it was the original line-up, which adds some kind of authenticity to it. J had his wah-wah and fuzz box pedals cranking at full power as he churned away, and the others lay back and let him do his thing, I think they played mostly older stuff, well what I knew. I had my camera with me, though being retarded as I am, on the way in a guy checked my bag, the camera pouch was right there in front of him, then he asks "Do you have a camera?" I should have said "no, it's my aardvark holder", but for some reason I was scared of the little Japanese guy and he took my camera, and I got it back at the end of the show. I could've taken pics with my phone, but who really cares about some old fat dudes playin guitars. I don't know what all these reunion tours are about, I think it's a big cash in, but at the same time it's a chance to see bands that I was too young to see, or never came to my neighbourhood 20 years ago. Like the Pixies they kind of seemed content, I guess they know they have nothing to prove anymore cause they proved it all 15 years ago, it's more like a retrospective. Although Deerhoof were another story, still a relatively new and unknown band, they are still trying to show what they can do, and they do it well. They also had some awesome support bands, the most notable was oshiripenpensu. Before this band started playing I could hear this weird groaning sound, I couldn't see the stage floor cause of all the people standing in front of it. Then out came 2 little dudes, a drummer and a guitarist and started playing some awesome crazy music, it was kind of Beefheartish with some Jazz twisted into it, really interesting. All of a sudden a long haired dude rises from the floor and starts screaming these mad Japanese lyrics. Personally I think the music was fine without him, but he was cool to watch. He dove into the crowd(which wasn't that big), then kind of stumbled across the floor and ended up just near me, he had no shirt on and his body was covered with scars. There was writing on his arms and it looked like he had remnants of vomit on his chin. He continued his screaming routine and harassed the audience. I was standing right next to him and I will admit the thought going through my head was that if he touched me I'd punch him out, but he was cool, enjoying himself. After a while he went back to the stage and hit himself in the head a few time with the mic, it made a pretty loud noise. He then climbed up into the lighting and hung by his legs, the best bit followed, he put his fingers in his mouth and tried to throw up, but there was only small chunks coming out. Meanwhile the drummer and the guitarist were looking at each other and him, their expressions were saying "oh shit man". So they rocked on for a while then the dude died, so they stopped, well he didn't die, but he was done. Two more bands played before Deerhoof, they were cool too, one actually interesting hiphop group and some funky dudes, but that's another story. So Deerhoof came on and they rocked too, guess they are having more success now, cause when I saw them in Oslo in 2004 they didn't have any instruments with them, this time they did.
Ok, so where was I? It's been a week since I started this post, and I got distracted, yes, Deerhoof, cool. An interesting and original sound in this age of piss weak copy cat rehashers. It's already April, unbelievable, I went snowboarding again in Early March, that was cool, the snow was melting and it actually started raining on my last run, a true sign that the season is over. Kind of funny, the sticky melting snow, I was trying to go fast, but it just holds you back. Same old night bus of death, I talked to some students about it, and they said they buses are uncomfortable for Japanese folks, my knees were pressed hard against the seat all the way, not nice. At least the return bus wasn't overnight. A big bonus was the cool rental clothing I got, my awesome banana yellow jacket and bright orange pants, I looked like a real snowboarding fireman. At least I was easy to find up the, my question is, why was a banana yellow jacket made in the first place?? Who would actually buy this thing. At first they gave both me and Enaji(my compadre) the same outfit, luckily he was too chunky to fit into his, or we would've been team dickhead, instead they gave him an even funkier purple 80's style suit, we were cool. I was yet again better on the board this time, my only major crash was when I tried to bomb the last bit and a dude rode in front of me, ending up in us both getting drilled. The neck was sore, but that was all.
It is now hanami time, or flower viewing, I think it's really just an excuse to get drunk as everyone goes to the park for picnics under the cherry trees while they are in bloom. I don't see the big deal, I checked it out on friday night, but it was pretty cold, so I didn't hang around too long. The students today gave me the impression that it was over rated. Almost finished here, I've actually been working a bit lately, so it means next week I get 6 days off in a row, so I'm gonna go on a mission, not sure exactly where, anywhere out side this goddam city, maybe to the south west, check it out. There's probably heaps more I could write here, but this will suffice for now. If anyone's still reading, gimme a sign if you are.
